By Digital Momma I just bought this scanner, and have only used it a few times, but I'm already blown away by how easy this is to use! Since my first two kids were born before digital cameras, I have boxes of photos to "digitize". This is making very quick work of it. I like the fact that it even accomodates the older square photos from when I was a kid. It has a color restoration feature on it for these older photos, and so far, so good. It quickly and easily converts back to the standard flatbed for bigger photos. I would definetely recommend this to anyone with a large amount of hard copy photos they would like to preserve. 40 of 40 people found the following review helpful. Wow! Great Photo Scanner! By Stuart Roch I've tried scanning in all my hard copy photos over the years, but the process of doing so on a traditional flatbed scanner has made the process nearly unbearable. It's about time that one of the big players released a scanner with auto-feed capability to scan photos effortlessly at a reasonable price. The scanner itself produces very nice scans and is a compitent piece of hardware. The real gem however is the feeder lid which has made scanning my collection of photos a breeze. No jams, no damage to the photos, and no hassle. Just drop a batch of up to 25 photos in the feed mechanism and go have a snack while the scanner does all the work. The included software does everything you need it to do - adjust color, crop, rotate, or remove red-eye - all with an easy to use interface. Only downsides were that the installation process was a bit messy (it does the job, but seems to be 4 software installation processes in one) and that the auto-feed mechanism can't accomodate 5x7's. If you have a bunch of photo albums around and want to take your memories digital, this is the scanner for you. 29 of 29 people found the following review helpful. Does the Job By F. Fernandez Got it 2 days ago. Spent the first day playing around with all the settings specific to the feeder (ADF). Now 250 scans into its life I can recommend it just because of this feature. I've looked around for a long time for this kind of features on a scanner; including an obscure scanner called fotofunnel or the trouble ridden HP w/ADF... anyway other details: I couldn't get Vuescan to show it's Batch feature. So it's useless for this scanner, though it works for the regular scanning features (maybe it'll be updated soon :). Same thing with Silverfast or what ever its name is. Out of 300 scans I've had 1 jam and 3 failure to feed (could'nt grab the photo but managed with a little help). The jam was simple; just open the lid and remove the photo that's on the glass and pull back the incoming photo about half an inch. In other words, I'm not too worried about it damaging my photos. One anoyance is that dust accumulates on the glass after a some 40 scans (more or less depending on how clean your pictures are). Good luck with your research. Got to go, about 3000 scans to go. =======update====== Now on my 2000th scan I can add a few things. -Some types of Black & White prints fail to feed. So I have to push each one an extra 1/4" for the feeder to grab it; after that all is well. -You can keep on stacking as it scans but I chose not to do it b/c I'm concerned about overheating something. So I let it rest a minute or less. -The feeder has a fan that is quite loud. I don't know what it's for but would guess it flattens the photograph to the scanner's glass. -Warped photos WILL jam inside. Nothing serious, but it interrupts the flow. All of my 25+ year old photos have this problem because they were peeled off albums. Ok, back to work... See all 27 customer reviews...

Dent I thought I would make what is normally the conclusion the beginning section because not everyone may have the time or the disposition to go through all these paragraphs unless actually interested in making a purchase. I am providing more detail that should support my conclusions AFTER the evaluation section. Evaluation ---------- This is, esentially, the HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-In-One Printer with an extra paper tray, 3 extra ink cartridges and some promo materials. The unit I reviewed did not have the extra paper tray. The reviewed unit meets the claim of it being a all-in-one solution. While it is not likely that any individual user would take advantage of all its features on a regular basis, it is reassuring to know that the features are there. The supplied software and the printer's own console interface allow for a tremenduous amount of flexibility and customization. Some of the more advanced features will require an above-average level of computer expertise but, even without a lot of customization, this will be a useful, worthy printing/faxing/copying/scanning appliance. While the superior quality of output would make this printer a good 'small office' candidate, its speed would probably disqualify it if the small office was doing any significant amount printing. I provided some personal benchmarks so that any prospective small business buyer could decide. As a 'home' printer, this comes as close to perfect as they come. I will be using it as a home printer so please do interpret my rating within that context. A minor observation regarding 'design'. I found it interesting that some of the functions available on the touch screen are duplicated on physical buttons on the printer's console. This was striking because I actually saw this model for sale at New York's Fifth Ave. Apple store. It immediately occured to me that an Apple designer would have none of those buttons if allowed to redesign the product. This is not criticism, it's only an observation, also prompted by the fact that, for example, when specifying the number of copies to be printed, I could NOT use the physical number pad but had to punch the number on the virtual keypad displayed on the touch screen. The strong, almost violent shaking the printer brings itself to when not on a perfectly steady surface was a little disturbing to me. I have little doubt that, if improperly placed, the printer would quickly lose its printheads alignment and it might even experience other technical trouble. Finally, I am happy that the HP Tech support solved my Vista-related problem but it would have been better if a printer that was manufatured only a few days before I received it had an updated CD or, at least, a flyer advising Vista users how to obtain the updated driver. Considering all of the above, the this printer gets a strong, very positive 4 stars. However, my view is that the OfficeJet Pro is basically a 'home' or 'home office' unit, not a 'small business' printer. As such, I see no advantage in purchasing the Premier' model instead of the 'one paper tray', less expensive version. _______________________________________________________________________________ First impressions ----------------- The HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-In-One Printer integrates print, copy, fax, scan document and photo-processing functions. HP supplies the printer itself, 'starter' ink cartridges, print heads and a phone wire. Ethernet or USB cables are not included. Thin manuals are provided for wireless and FAX setup. A quick installation poster is provided as well. The full 300+ manual can be downloaded from the HP site. The CD has drivers for the several supported Operating Systems and a number of additional applications such as OCR (optical character recognition). By Outglare@Amazon I've only used work-related scanners for a long time, and these were big high-end models that had their own power source. I didn't expect this Canon to be as fast or have as a good color fidelity from the outset, but certain design aspects impressed me quite a bit

Comparison of the 1660 & 2400 scanners By A Customer I purchased both the 2400 and the 1660 scanners to compare thierresults.I previously tried and returned the Microtek 4900 and the 4850, both had an acceptable quality for photo scanning ( though they were both a little undersaturated and soft)but I had problems with both not being able to go into standby mode, the light would always remain on even when the software said it should be out. Also the scanner button program when loading would never be able able to locate the scanner and was constantly running in the background.Enough said steer away from them. Now on to the quality products.I did some very extensive testing head to head on both units using various color test charts, black and white resolution charts and many detailed photos of various sizes.I then tried scanning them at different resolutions/dpi. After repeating the test numerous times my conclusions are, even though the 2400 can scan at higher resolutions 2400x4800 which should be better for scanning slides and negatives than the 1660's lower 1600x3200 resolution, the 1660 scanner had a more vivid, slightly sharper scans when comparing them with the 2400's scans. These results were equally noticable both on screen and in their printouts.(I am using the HP Photosmart 7150 printer which I reviewed also)So, unless you do need the higher resolutions of the 2400 scanner(which still gives good results)along with it's Packaged Adobe Photoshop Elements 1.1,you would be better of saving yourself the $$ and purchase the 1660 instead. These results were substantiated by numerous other people even including the Epson Rep which I met at Best Buy who had a chance to compare my printouts of the scans. She suggested to contact Epson's Tech Staff to find out why this is so.Buy the way I am a Computer Tech myself, and am a perfectionist when purchasing new equipment. 42 of 42 people found the following review helpful. 3rd Try On Epson And Closest Being A Perfection By A Customer This is my thrid Epson scanner and this is the one is the best of the bunch after owning Perfection 610 and Perfection 1240U. My primary reason to upgrade to this scanner is USB2 connection which makes a big speed difference especially on high-res scans. The quality of photo scan is magnificent - a printout of the scan from my Epson photo printer looks virtually identical to the original, something my two prior Epson scanners don't quite achieve. In addition, when scanning magazines, the moire pattern is less pronounced than my previous Epsons as well. In term of installation, I encounter absolutely no problem. I don't even bother to install the enclosed CD-ROM - don't really care about the bundled photo software anyway since I use Photoshop. My best advice - for ALL SCANNERS AND PRINTERS, IF POSSIBLE ALWAYS DOWNLOAD THE LATEST DRIVER FROM THE MANUFACTURER instead of using the bundled CD-ROM which almost always contains outdated drivers. Alternatively, after installation IMMEDIATELY update the driver to the latest version that supports your operating system. Before buying/installing any new products, always check the manufacturer's web site to see if there's any issues / software updates with the product. In summary, you get what you pay for - Epson 1660 is a great, fast scanner. 73 of 77 people found the following review helpful. We bought it for film and slide scanning and have not been disappointed in its performance. It's fast, has fantastic resolution (rivaling much more expensive film scanners) and will do multiple slides or negative strips. The "but" refers to the included software. The Epson scanning software is quite good, but I had hoped to be able to use the SilverFast package, which was supposed to be a full software package. Unfortunately, it's a "crippled" application, lacking the ability to convert multiple slides in a single scan into individual pictures (which the full application CAN do). This was a major disappointment. So, hardware great, software not so much. 46 of 46 people found the following review helpful. Unreliable Epson V750-M Pro By EpsonUser After making less than 500 scans over the course of 3 years, I recently noticed that images were skewed...rectangular images were scanning as parallelograms! It was slight, but resulted in useless scans. After a bout with Epson tech support, I brought the scanner to their repair depot, who diagnosed the problem as a bad carriage assembly (this includes all the working parts excluding the plastic case). This is a $450 repair with a 90 day warranty. With Epson boasting a MCBF (mean cycles before failure) of 100,000 scans, I thought my unit should do better than 0.5% before failure but Epson disagreed and refused to fund the repair. Epson should stand behind clearly defective units. 60 of 62 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Multi-format Scanner By Richard Eltzroth I've first heard about this Epson scanner about 8 months ago and was very interested in its 6400 dpi scanning resolution capability. With that kind of resolution you can get decent prints from even Super 8 movie film. Check out the very thorough review of the V750 at the Photo-i.co.uk website. After just a week of having this scanner now, I'm impressed with the very good film (slides and negatives) scans it produces. As noted in the above listed review though, the film holders are rather flimsy. For odd sized film, you basically just lay the film flat on the glass. This supposedly can produce ring type artifacts; but I haven't noticed any. The User's Guide on the included CD isn't all that self-explanatory. For the price of this scanner, it would seem that Epson could at least provide a paper User's Guide that could be more detailed. I haven't tried any of the included software yet. The scanner works fine as is. Other than the cheap film holders and User's Guide, I'm very satisfied with it. This is a scanner that is competitive with much more expensive dedicated film scanners and can scan a wide assortment of film formats as well as just regular flat paper scans. Goodenow Though I'm a scanning veteran, having worked my way through a few generations of SCSI and USB devices, I must admit to being mightily impressed by the 2580 and at least parts of its software package. If a tad clumsy to use at times, the bundle offers an option to do some color correction of faded prints as they are scanned, and another nice one to easily scan multiple images at once, properly setting up separate files for each. One can choose default, home or professional settings to fine tune scans. Like most scanners in this price range the 2580 has buttons on its front which provide for instant scanning, e-mailing, etc. The proof is in the pudding and I must say results are just fine. Although I've yet to try the film strip reader, results with old 35mm slides were easily equal, if not superior, to a far more expensive Olympus slide scanner I bought a couple of years ago. A couple of old 2x3' prints turned into beautiful 8x10's, and so on. The USB 2.0 connection is very fast (once the scanner warms up), and despite its features the scanner's footprint is pleasantly small. Now for some precautionary information. The Epson's twain driver apparently doesn't like competing with those left over from previous scanners, particularly Canons. So if, after following directions to install the scanner very carefully (you MUST install the driver software with the 2580 disconnected) it does not fire up when called from the Epson supplied apps, or any other scanning ones you have, be sure to fully uninstall other scanner drivers and be sure to kill the older scanner in device manager as well. My main computers run Win98SE and I've yet to see what would happen were I to use it with my XP laptop which has portable scanner software on it. But keep my findings in mind and save yourself a call to customer service. As for the application software's usability, the included ArcSoft program provides basic editing as well as a neat set of projects (make your own calendars, etc.) but serious users will want to scan into Photoshop or another more feature-laden program. The 2580 works well with both a Paperport program I've used for years (and has many good features) and Photoshop Elements, my editor of choice. There is no printed manual or even a big pdf one. This said, the html-based help feature is easy to use and, in terms of software and general setup issues, quite good. Finally, I had to call Epson support for some help on the driver issue, my initial concern being I had a hardware problem. Direct telephone help is a long distance charge, but I must say my call went through to a real live person almost instantly, and her support was friendly and fast. And, no, Epson has not outsourced its help desk to the other side of the world. It's right in the middle of America, in Colorado. All in all a fine product. 56 of 57 people found the following review helpful. Good but could be better By A. Johnson I bought this scanner to scan in my old negatives. This scanner will do that with no cropping required, although it is a bit of a skill to get each strip to load properly at first. I do however have a problem with this scanner, and that is that is isn't as good as it should be in aligning the negative frames with its scans. The the process of scanning is itself quite tedious as it takes about a minute per frame (yes frame, not strip, and more if you want better quality), but to be expected. However, I find some of my scans come with black edges where the alignment is just not quite right. Is this the end of the world? No, but it is annoying to have to rescan perhaps several times to get the image to occupy the full frame with none of the border also captured. This is supposed to be all automatic and to spare users from having manually to align negative strips in little plastic holders, and it does that - but the process isn't as automatic

Amazon.com Product Description Just when you thought scanning couldn't get any faster, crisper, or sleeker, along comes the new HP Scanjet 4670. This small but mighty scanner will revolutionize the way you think about scanning. Sized to fit in a drawer, briefcase, or even vertically on a bookshelf, yet versatile and durable enough to scan oversized and three-dimensional items, it’s the perfect fit for a home office, family room, or college dorm. Everyone can find a use for this handy machine. Be more productive by converting memos, blurry faxes, and other text documents into editable text using optical character recognition (OCR) software (no more retyping!). Scan photos and documents and instantly e-mail them to family and friends without a PC. Make a photo inventory of heirlooms or other valuables. Or scan negatives and slides using a transparency adapter to create an archive of your photos. So how do you actually scan? For single pages, simply follow these steps: Pull the top edge of the scanner, rotating the scanner forward in the holder. The scanner can rest against the front edge of the holder. Position the item face up in the lower left corner of the holder, with the top of the item facing left. Use the media placement tabs on the holder to position the item. Return the scanner to its original position on the holder. You can see the item face up through the scanner glass. Press the Scan button. For books and other thick materials, simply place the scanner flat. Give mobility a whole new meaning Now that you telecommute, your family room is more than a family room; it’s your office. Space is a valuable commodity, so the slim HP 4670 scanner is an ideal fit in both form and function. Being able to scan oversized items has been a lifesaver for those drawings you frequently e-mail to the office for approval; especially because it’s as simple as placing your scanner on the easel, scanning the drawing in sections, and letting the ArcSoft Panorama Maker software automatically and seamlessly "stitch" it together. One click of the Instant Share button and you mail the entire list of recipients at once. When the workday ends, you place your scanner back on the bookshelf, where it’s safe and out of sight. Best of all, if you absolutely must finish those presentation transparencies on a Saturday, the HP 4670 is as mobile as you are. Just grab your scanner, transparent materials adapter, and laptop, and head to your favorite quiet spot. Whether you're sitting on the floor or in an office, the unique Scanjet technologies (high-end color separation; accurate, flattened scanning bed; and lots of other automatic color-balancing, restoration, and enhancement features) give you professional, polished results … no matter where you are. Get the whole picture One of the most fun and unique things you can do with your HP 4670 is create gorgeous panoramic photos (even 360° panoramas). Simply scan your image in sections and the Automatic Stitching feature in ArcSoft Panorama Maker software (included) will automatically reassemble oversized images for printing. You can combine horizontal, vertical, or tiled sets of images. Save space The HP 4670 is so slim it fits on a bookshelf or in a briefcase. You can store it vertically, like a book, so it’s perfect for a college dorm or a combined family room/office area. But don't let the ultra-thin design fool you: It’s made to move around and take with you. We even drop-tested the scanner from three feet! So if a sibling riot erupts, triggering an accidental fall from the table, the HP 4670 will survive unscathed. The windowpane is tough polycarbonate plastic and tempered glass to resist chipping, scratching, and breaking. (That’s the same stuff used in many safety hardhats, motorcycle helmets, and riot shields.) The frame is secured with 12 screws (twice as many as most other scanners), and trimmed in rubber to absorb shocks. The carriage has a special mechanical design that protects the sensors and their wire bonds. More features: One-touch operation. Four-button design makes it easy to perform common tasks: Scan Copy Instant Share Power Save Six-second-preview scan Get speedy confirmation of a successful scan! Precise image placement. Look through the see-through scanning window to "frame" and place items just where you want them. Cross-platform adaptable The HP 4670 is Windows 98-, 2000-, Me-, XP-, and Mac-compatible. Complete high-speed connectivity. Compatibility with USB 2.0 specifications allows plug-and-play installation of peripheral devices. Exclusive HP technology. Charge coupled device (CCD) scanning brings together an innovative combination of a new, thin optical system and CCD scanner technologies. CCD captures light more efficiently than other methods, and produces a grain-free print. Sharpen up Resolution is a measurement in dots per inch (dpi) of the sharpness and clarity of an image. The HP 4670 has 2400-dpi optical resolution, producing crisp, clear, vibrant images. With 48-bit color, you'll also see clear photos with brighter yellows, richer reds, and cooler blues. Scan anything The versatile HP 4670 can scan anything from books and photos to oversized items. Variable orientation An easel comes with the scanner, so you can use it vertically, horizontally, face-up or face-down, for large format or hard-to-capture items. Slides and negatives. I like the slim design and it scans reasonably fast; at least compared to what I have been use to. Also the see-thru design is a plus. At first I thought it rather gimmicky, but found out in scanning large maps and such it was a boon to getting a minimal but slight overlap between adjacent scans. Also this scanner does not mind being inverted, in fact it does not care which orientation it is in. Some desk top scanners do not like being inverted, if fact they jam! Now the down side, on certain colors it scans alternating bands of light and dark exposure across the width of the image. Fourteen to be exact. It turns up on grey colors, ivory, off-whites; it is very distinctive on silver-gray. On full color pictures or typed documents it does not manifest. Playing with the exposure setting does not help if the banding is strong. Also if the image is not tight against the platen, this alternating light/dark pattern also occurs. According to HP advance tech support this is due to optimization for scanning colors in such a space saving scanner bar design. The scanner has very poor depth of field. Other desktop scanners start to loose focus and the image darkens if the object being scanned gets further than a 1/4" from the platen. (Though you get some really bad parallax errors before that point!) With this scanner the image goes dark and the bands appear if the space is a mere 1/16". HP advance tech support has a document describing this issue but it pertains to scanning 3D objects. However for practical purposes it is a fault when you try to scan anything near the gutter of a book. If scanning maps or an atlas you need to under-pad the document so that it can conform and press tight against the platen. Any gaps between the document and platen will appear dark, the scanning lamp is underpowered. You may have trouble getting the HP Director software to run with some computers from a very popular company, dude. Though it did work on other XP and Win98 machines I tried, so the fault seems to be certain installations/configurations of XP and not HP scanning software supplied with the scanner. I never did get it to launch on my computer and ended up having to scan via my image editing software using the TWAIN interface. Which was HP tech supports workaround. Once you get into the HP scanning application (via Director or TWAIN) the HP Scan interface looks like something designed for a UNIX workstation or Windows 3.11. Nowhere near as polished as other, even older HP scanning applications I have seen, downright primitive. The third party panoramic software bundled is junk. I tried several photographs and then successively simpler images (line art, scanned typed documents) for it to stitch together and it never even came close to getting the images aligned. Even with the use of the manual 'assistance markers' it failed every time. Completely hopeless. I had hoped to make use of the OCR software but had so much trouble with the other issues I never got around to loading and trying it. HP tech support will string you along if you have these exposure issues. Unfortunately I bought my 4670 when they first came out and there were no reviews yet posted. HP will try to tell you a self-powered USB hub is required. Don't believe it, if you have 200mA available at the USB port you have plenty and most new machines far exceed that; for example mine had 500mA (by the way HP was unable to tell me what the minimum USB port power requirement was for the scanner.) However I worked with HP outsourced tech support and tried all the different things they suggested like latest drivers and reloading the software and sent them test scans to examine. They replaced the scanner once, and were going to do so again, when I started to notice others were complaining of the same

A dream product By Electronics Fan (NYC) I needed a scanner mainly for scanning my old prints, negatives and slides. Initially I was going to buy a cheaper photo scanner (Epson 1250), but was disappointed by its poor quality. The 2450 has exceeded my expectations. From prints or negatives, it is producing superb quality scans, and it does it FAST. A few comments from my experience so far:- The scanner comes with an excellent bundle of software. TWAIN is a great product - very user friendly UI for all types of scans (scan to file, print, email, post to the Web). Not too happy with SilverFast though (bad UI and unstable). Photoshop Elements, although a learning curve is needed, is excellent photo editing tool.- Unless you have to print a HiRes photo over 8x10's, use 300dpi: you'll get the same results as higher resolutions, and is much faster (scanning a color print at 300dpi is ~30sec, compared to over 5min at 1600dpi. - If you scan at 1600dpi/48bit, be prepared for huge amount of computer resources for processing the image, both by TWAIN and Photoshop. I have a 2.2GHz P4, 1GB memory, and when I tried to scan a large photo at 1600dpi, about 500MB of memory was used (good thing TWAIN displays how much mem is needed prior to the scan). Photoshop's performance was also degraded.- After some experimentation, I'm getting best results by making some pre-scan enhancements via TWAIN (mainly Gamma & Color adjustments), and add final touches with Photoshop. Assuming you have the time to spend, this will be a fun thing to do, and will feel great when you see that with a decent photo printer you can produce better photos than your originals!- The scanner works fine with XP. Its drivers are not certified by Microsoft for XP, (which means you have to manually install the drivers that come with the scanner), but so far I had no problems.I think this is one of the best buys I made. The only concern I can think of, is its size compared to other scanners (shouldn't be a problem to most of you, unless you live in an apartment in Manhattan as I do...). You can get a scanner at half price or less, but if you need to digitize your photos and slides, this is the way to go. 63 of 63 people found the following review helpful. This Scanner Delivers! By DougMac After searching for the best price for this scanner, I purchased it from Amazon. By using the free shipping option, the Amazon price was right up there with the best. Now for the scanner...I owned an Epson 1650 photo, which was not suitable for scanning 35mm if you want to print larger than 4x6. After reading countless reviews, I decided to upgrade. I have scanned 35mm color and B&W negatives as well as slides with the 2450. 8x10's stand up to darkroom prints made on my Leica Focomat. In many ways they are better, because I use the included Silverfast software plugin to Photoshop to adjust the image at scanning. Further tweaking in Photoshop renders wonderful prints - better than spending hours in the wet lab dodging, burning and bleaching.I also have panorama negatives taken nearly 100 years ago that are roughly 2.25 x 6 inches. The 2450 with it's 4x9 scanning area outshines the competition, allowing me to scan the entire negative at once. This scanner really delivers with medium and large format - 6x6 cm and 4x5. The resultant prints are stunning - much better than I'm able to achieve in the wet lab. The results of scanning vintage photos for which I have no negatives are also superior.I know a dedicated film scanner would give better results, but I can't pay the $3,000 to $5,000 freight for a 4x5 film scanner. Since I don't plan to go bigger than 13x19 prints, I'm happy as a clam with this setup.... 55 of 55 people found the following review helpful. Excellent, affordable medium-larger format scanning is here! By A Customer I needed a higher resolution than 1200 dpi for scanning 120 film, and I am glad I finally

Easy and great scan quality By Mistress Blue After wistfully wanting a slide scanner but knowing they were out of my price range, I jumped at the chance to get one under $500. Normal scanners just don't have the resolution to do slides or negatives. I was expecting a lot of hassle, as is typical with periperhals, but this little scanner was really easy to set up and use. It lets you make corrections to contrast, color level, brightness, etc., before you actually scan. I take a lot of slides and can finally make prints from them easily on my printer (before i had to pay big $$ to have slides printed, since they have to make a negative and then print from that, resulting in major quality loss). I also take a lot of black and white portraits, but don't have a darkroom. I can finally tweak the image just like I'm developing it myself with chemicals.Scanning is fast and the results are sharp and colorful. It's pretty amazing for the price. 56 of 56 people found the following review helpful. Kudos to H/P By R. Lade Thank God for H/P! I do a lot of photography and being a purist (using film and a darkroom) I resisted the move to digital imaging mainly because I couldn't find what I needed without a second mortgage on my condo. I needed to be able to scan negatives mainly because the scan quality is higher resulting in better print quality. When I saw the S20's bang for the buck, I knew that my digital imaging time had come. This scanner is the greatest thing since sliced bread as far as I'm concerned. And knowing H/P quality to be what it is, I bought my S20 with every confidence and not a second thought. My faith has been well-rewarded. I couldn't ask for more for what I have invested. Anyone planning to scan photos, slides, and negatives need look no further than the S20. Thanks H/P! 75 of 77 people found the following review helpful. Top quality professional-level scans By Digilante Although the cost of this scanner is still prohibitive to some, the fact is that this is a professional-quality film scanner at an excellent price.Initially I purchased the much cheaper Epson Perfection Photo 1200. It had dead spots along the scanning array - turned out the entire batch of a few hundred scanners was faulty. I then decided to splurge and got the HP S20, and I have not looked back.Installation is tricky - so be sure to read the instructions in the (VERY POOR!) manual. Once you have that going, the rest is a breeze. The included software is fantastic in that it's analysis of the image and automatic adjustment of colour, balance, exposure, etc, is dead right 9 out of 10 times. Under- or over-exposed slides and negatives are no longer an issue. I love the exposure control, which allows to adjust exposure separately for light, medium, and dark regions - most scanner software only has a single exposure control. This allows you to make excellent repairs to a face that came out too dark in a sunny picure.Resolution of course is spectacular - a bit too spectacular perhaps since every single microscopic dust particle gets duly represented on the scanned image :-) Seriously though, the results of blowing up about a fifth of a slide and printing it as a full page on an HP PhotoSmart P1000 printer were excellent. The scanner is a bit noisy, and also very slow - especially at the high resolutions, as can be expected. Slides, negative strips, as well as photographs are dealt with relatively easily. The only problem that I see is that the scanner is unable to scan a single frame of a negative (only strips of two or more). This is an issue with slides when you want to scan the maximum frame area - i.e. scan the slide without the mount. I think the solution will be to buy a slide mount that is easily re-openable, and use a craft-knife to cut out a larger viewing area.In summary, if it is convenience and speed you want, then perhaps this is not for you - however if scan

Zogby Recently upgraded to MS Vista and almost at the same time, ran out of ink on my two HP printers, one for pictures and an older All in One. The L7580 had just been released and I was particularly interested in its ability to print using less ink at a resultant cost savings over my two existing printers. When I got it and printed out the test page, I jumped because of the speed at which the page kicked out. I had to use this with a temporary HP print driver on my Vista machine, but the full Vista driver is now available. Installed the new driver (all 360 Mbytes) without any problems. I am happy with all its features. Have not had any problems with this since I took it out of the package. The front display shows the status of your ink cartridges which is helpful. Also, the ink cartridges now all use the same number on the package so you can easily find replacement cartridges without having to remember multiple numbers. Picture and scanner quality is excellent for my standards and needs. It comes with a slot to insert memory cards, but since I use Photoshop to prepare my pictures, I have never used this feature on this system. If this is important, then the larger display of the next model up would be desirable. Four stars means I am very happy with this printer. I would consider five stars if I was more of an aficianado of the various printers out there and could speak more knowledgeably about other models. 39 of 41 people found the following review helpful. Big waste of time - great printer for the competition By R Green After spending a day and a half with technical support, I returned the printer and purchased a Canon MP530. Here are some of my suggestions: 1. If you end up buying one and need to call tech support, try to get the Canadian call center - they are helpful and my multiple hours on the phone was as pleasant as could be 2. Not all the features in the manual are available on all models. the digital file cabinet for example is only available on the very high end one. note to HP: spend a couple of extra dollars and either print separate manuals or at least spell out which features are available on which models. And it's not like they chopped down trees to print the manual. it's a digital file yet they didn't take the couple of hours that it might have taken to customize the manual. 3. the software is the worse i've seen. It never installed correctly and HP took me through a full hour of manually uninstalling the many different parts to re-install. waste of time as I never could get the printer to be recognized the second time 4. I set up the canon mp530 in 30 minutes earlier today and I've been smiling ever since. 5. And before the hp people discount this review as someone not technically astute, my primary business for ten years was digital printing and pre-press. I've been part of the industry for many many years. 38 of 42 people found the following review helpful. This thing just won't install correctly By G. Zichermann Bought the 7530 in all its overpackaged glory today. Brought it home and began the arduous process of setting it up (30 mins of labor just installing ink/paper/print heads). After bringing it online, it began its self-test and installation routine. During the install, the printer gave me 3 paper jam errors (there were no paper jams) and failed to initialize. I then called HP support where I was routed to an Indian call center and put on hold for 33.5 minutes without talking to anyone knowledgeable. Three further calls to support resulted in misrouted queue requests ("Your product appears to be out of warranty"), until I finally reached Chris. Chris had absolutely zero insight or valuable assistance to offer me in setting up this printer. Let me be clear - I'm a very experienced technology CEO - and am really comfortable setting up devices like printers. But

Richards I've used scanners for ten years and I am here to tell you that the Epson 2400 Photo laps the competition and leaves them in the dust. The setup of this solidly constructed scanner onto my Windows 2000 went without a hitch. Most problems associated with scanner setups trace back to a failure to read and follow instructions, so I used care to read through everything before beginning! With that completed, I followed instructions in the automated Epson TWAIN 5 and quickly got a perfect photo scan 300 DPI. The buttons on the front worked well, sending respective scans to printer, e-mail and web. I kept grabbing for the mouse, expecting to be called to do something, but everything was automated. I placed 6 photos on the glass, leaving room between them, and the TWAIN identified and segregated each into its own file perfectly.I got this scanner to handle my collection of slides, so that was a very important feature for me. Removal of the laminated lid-liner exposes the TPU light. The liner pops in and out nicely. The beautifully designed slide/negative holder lies on the glass, indexing precisely. This combination of engineering elegance illustrates a sufficiency few engineers seem to grasp. "Keep it simple, stupid". It holds 4 slides or a strip of up to 6 negatives. I was absolutely impressed with the design and efficiency thus far! The slides simply drop within their frame onto the glass and are retrieved effortlessly. With another very slick demonstration of engineering wizardry, negative filmstrips slide smoothly and effortlessly into the other side of the frame, and are positioned precisely and uniformly above the glass with no bends. It seemed too easy, but in only 42 seconds, the scanner automatically recognized the color positives, lit the TPU lamp, pre-scanned all four slides, and left thumbnails before me to select from. What an encouraging start! NOTE: One reviewer is ENTIRELY mistaken when he incorrectly stated that all four slides must be scanned. Quite to the contrary, a check box adjacent to each thumbnail permits any of them to be unselected. What he thought those check marks meant can only be imagined and testifies that some people are best left in a locked room with no sharp objects for their own safety.Operating with only USB-1 on my machine, the 2400 Photo scanned each slide in 54 seconds, which I considered to be quite acceptable. Not only were the results stunning, they appeared perfect, with no hotspots, off colors, or degradation of sharpness. It delivered absolutely perfect reproduction, with precise cropping, too. However, I wanted greater resolution than the default 300 DPI. While 300 DPI is fine for printing slides, I desire to archive slides for viewing on the giant-size screens of the future and wanted to take advantage of the 2400 DPI capability of the unit. Access is easily gained to the inner sanctum of Epson TWAIN 5 by clicking a button during the 15-second warm-up phase. Within is an almost unlimited array of options. 2400 DPI from a slide generated a large 17.1 meg file to deal with, which can either be saved in it's bulky Windows Bitmap version, or as a more manageable 1.1 meg JPEG file, no loss of image data. Expecting a more time-consuming project, I instead found that speed was mysteriously unaffected. In fact, because pre-scanning of subsequent items can be bypassed in manual mode, four slides were completed at 2400 magnificent DPI from a cold start in exactly 3:50 minutes; a full 70 seconds faster than the same number in auto mode. Adopting a rhythm, I scanned 63 slides in one hour, which I thought to be a fabulous rate. Any number of slides can be scanned before you close the TWAIN and "finish" them, at which time you can rename if you desire, de-select unwanted photos, select the final format and determine the target directory of choice. Having said that, I would

Most Excellent By A Customer After reading other folks' reviews on scanners and seeing all the problems they had with cheap ones, I decided to spend a bit more for something better. It was a good decision: the CanoScan D1250U2F has exceeded my expectations.Software and hardware installation was straight forward, and the documentation is clear and simple. An important factor in my decision to buy the Canon was its inclusion of Adobe Photoshop Elements -- it is very intuitive software, powerful, and it interfaces well with the scanner.Color rendition is excellent, and scanned photos appear well-balanced and clean. On my computer (running Windows XP, 1.8GHz, 384MB RAM) scanning at moderate resolutions is reasonably quick and downloads are prompt, even though I'm running with the USB 1.1 driver and not 2.0. Scanning a 3x5 photo at 600DPI takes about 15-20 seconds, maybe 10-15 seconds at 300DPI. A lot of that time is the scanner "adjusting the lamp" before the actual scan. The film and slide scanning apparatus is easy to use and produces passable results. The images can be contrasty and the colors somewhat subdued, but in this price range I don't expect professional slide scanning. At 2400DPI it makes an image fairly close to the resolution of the film and is certainly good enough for most email-the-photo and web publishing applications. The scanner also comes with optical character recognition (OCR) software, which works, although I did not find it intuitive. Also, the OCR software makes some bizarre decisions, especially concerning spelling correction, and seems eager to take control of the scanner, initiating scans at unexpected times. Aside from the puzzling OCR software, if I wanted to be nit-picky I'd say the lid hinges are a bit flimsy, and the buttons on the front of the scanner are pointless. In my opinion it would be a better product if they removed the buttons from the front and put a power switch on the back. But that's all just nits... The scanner does a great job overall. 95 of 99 people found the following review helpful. EXCELLENT. By Chas Devlin So far, it works wonderfully. I'd read a millon reviews of other scanners -- Agfa, Umax, HP, Microtek etc., but after a while it all evens out. I couldn't afford the next level in 'professional' models and really didn't require all the gizmos that accompany them. So the Canon was my final choice. Using Windows ME, it set up in less than 10 minutes. Hardware was found easily and there was no driver problem. I was scanning immediately. Up until this point I was using a friends scanner on Windows 98. A heavy model, 4 or 5 years old (clunky parallel/serial port etc.) and it was incredibly slow, and loud. This was such a difference. I only tested a color photo (5 x 7) at 200% (dpi) and it did it in just under 30 seconds. I also tried a large color drawing from a book and it was surprisingly good. I'm sure the real test will be images at much higher res (but who really needs them that big?). Plus I've yet to try grayscale or scan from magazines/newspapers. Using the 'descreen' option worked exceptionally well. It completely removed the moiree pattern from an album cover. Very surprised that it did it so well.I'm also using it with an Adaptec USB 2.0 card. It's certainly fast. I haven't done really high-res stuff yet, but I'm sure it'll be better than what I'm used to. The software is fine although I haven't used its archival/Photo record stuff. It seems aimed at beginners and may be useful. If you already have Photoshop 5 or 6, you probably won't need Photoshop Elements that comes with it.While there are obviously better scanners out there with more gizmos and larger scan areas (at a higher price of course), I've no complaints. It seems ideal for my home/office use and is intended to scan family photos, vinyl album covers and wide array of other materials. It comes with a slide tray that, also

Williamson I am an amateur photographer and a professional Software Engineer. I purchased this printer as a general purpose printer and as a low cost photo printer. My home network which consists of 5 Windows XP computers and 1 Mac OS X computer (mine). I connected the printer to my network using the built in ethernet port. All of the testing I performed was over the network and I never tried the USB port. The printer does everything it advertises and does it well. I tested printing, scanning, and card reader functionality using OS X Tiger, OS X Leopard, Windows XP, and the printer worked flawlessly regardless of the OS I was using. You just need to make sure that you download and install the latest and greatest driver for the particular OS you are using. I also tried scanning directly using Photoshop CS3 on OS X Leopard and everything worked perfect One of the reasons I purchased the MP970 was for low cost photo printing. I also own an Epson R2400 which is a semi-professional dedicated photo printer. The R2400 is expensive to purchase, and expensive to operate. I was curious how the MP970 photo quality would compare to the R2400 so I directly compared photos printed on the Canon MP970 to the same photos printed on the Epson R2400. The Canon MP970 prints great pictures, but it is simply does not produce the same quality pictures as the R2400. I printed pictures from Photoshop in a color managed environment using Ilford Smooth Pearl Photo Paper and compared the R2400 to the MP970. The Canon MP970 did very well but Epson R2400 was definitely the winner - which was the expected result. The Epson had better highlights, better shadows, and more neutral mid tones. Notwithstanding, the MP970 produced very respectable prints which would be acceptable in all but the most demanding applications The bottom line is that if you are really serious about excellent photo quality, this is not the printer for you. If you want a low cost way to produce very respectable prints, this printer is definitely for you. I feel that the Canon MP970 fully meets or exceeds my quality expectations for a low cost photo printer. And, as an added bonus, the MP970 is way cheaper to operate than my R2400 because it uses a lot less ink. As an example of how I use it, it's a lot more cost effective to print 25 Christmas cards on my MP970 than it is to print the same 25 cards on the R2400. I only gave the printer 4 stars because it powers itself off every 2 to 4 days for no reason. Canon technical support confirmed that the printer should not power itself off and sent me a new replacement printer under warranty. Unfortunately, the replacement printer also powers itself off for no reason I tried several different electrical outlets in my office and it did not fix the problem. Also, no other devices in my office power themselves off. This review has been here for a while now and several people posted comments and said that their MP970 printers also intermittently power off. Update on Intermittent Power off Issue: After about 9 months of operation, I ended up moving the printer from my office to my Son's room (for unrelated reasons). For unexplained reasons, the printer stopped intermittently powering itself off after I moved it to my Son's room. The printer has been in my Son's room for roughly 3 months now and it has not powered itself off once. Weird. I have had the printer for roughly 1 year and I have not had any problems except for the power issue mentioned above. Here is what the printer does: - Double sided printing - Ethernet connectivity - USB Connectivity - Initiate a scan from the printer or the computer - Scan to the disk on your computer, scan to email, scan to PDF - Copy - Read camera memory cards Access the cards via network or USB - Scanner is compatible with Photoshop CS3 on OS X - Compatible with OS.
