Comments more useful than 293 290 people have found this review helpful. Why I returned the CanoScan 8800F and re-purchased the HP G4050 by Gregg are a husband and father of three young children, with many pre-digital photos of our children, perhaps with a couple of miles of old family photos dating 1930. Like many, I narrowed the search for the CanoScan 8800F scanner, the V500 Epson and HP G4050. There were a number of reviews that have focused on scanning negatives and slides. My review will focus on digitizing photos. There are many criticisms of the three scanners. Lay ups and downs, Epson usually get a good scan quality reviews, with a mention of buggy drivers and slide negative fragile and accessories. The Canon is criticized pretty good build quality and scan quality photos and most people seem to think that its software interface is cleaner. HP is seen as the stronger and bigger, but is seen as the realization slowly and with software that is very difficult to work in Vista (apparently already been fixed by HP with complete control to be released) or fail with a great effort with HP technical support necessary to fix things (although once defined), the scanner receives compliments about the quality of the scanned photos I saw the Epson, Canon, HP and scanners in a couple of local stores and had the opportunity to compare its quality for the building. The economy feels Epson did (much less), the Canon feels very well made, and HP seems to be better built one of the three batters with a reasonable margin. HP is great, but it has a scanning area a little larger to allow 4x6 to scan 4 photos at once. In addition, pictures of my parents and grandparents are all odd sizes, so having a little more space in the crystal is useful when trying to scan multiple photos. I My system: AMD 4000 dual core, 3 GB RAM, a hard disk of 500 concerts and 320 gig hard drive standard video card, running XP, a decent power, but not super fast. I am a fairly experienced computer user and have really come into Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements in the last year or two. There are commercial applications, but in the past year I have come to see that they are very powerful program, home users get truly professional results at project level in the family. The comparison: Epson, Canon, HP, and is similarly priced, but may well over $ 50, depending on sales, discounts and deals. It seems generally agreed that the next step, the Epson V700 V750 or about $ 500 and $ 700, respectively. I bought a HP, gave it back, bought the Canon, gave it back, then back to buy HP. Canon scanner is not bad and is actually quite fast. Canon and Epson use of LED lighting, which is faster than the HP lights, making a clear distinction, but fast or slow the individual for these scanners. I use my scanner at night when the children sleep. I scan and the restoration of family photos, I'm in no rush. I do not want a scanner that is super slow, but I do not mind if the scanner is not fast. It's a good thing, because the Canon is fast and the HP is certainly not. Canon software is easier to use, but HP, but not super-light is quite easy to use when playing with it for a bit. HP is noisy, however. Will it wake up my kids and wife? No, but both the HP scanners (the one I returned and I was) sounded the same from different vendors. Output from scanners are also the same, at least say something to produce consistency. The scan quality is what does it for me. For comparison, I scanned some old pictures in black and white and some color photos, especially a wedding a couple of impressions that have a matte finish light than most people scan photos to know dull surface of the scan result.
