I chose this model because of its low price, high resolution, and a desktop scanner that can also handle the negatives. I have used for several days now and I must say, I love this scanner! It must be the quietest scanner I've ever seen. I was on the phone with my mom while scanning and she never heard. He is also fast. With the highest resolution, the screen to scan negatives takes about 20 seconds. The actual scan takes less than two minutes. The quality of the scans is great, whether you're scanning table, color negatives or black and white negatives (black and white actually) do. Software wise, the TWAIN driver is very, very nice, with tons of options. It works fine on my XP Pro system with a very low-end graphics card. The package PhotoStudio sucks, however, and I do not think I use Irfanview (available free online) works very well for most of my needs, including serving as a facilitator for batch scanning of files. I have not tried the included OmniPage, however, I used a previous version, so hopefully that works very well. The other comment here seems to reject this scanner to be made more cheaply. Personally, I like I did. If you are unfair to the team, then yes, spend twice as much for something that all of the metal. But I treat my team as well. The plastic negative holder works well for me and is very easy to use. I see nothing wrong with the plastic hinge. It works smoothly and seems well designed. Another good thing about this scanner is that it does not weigh much at all! I like that because I have a glass table that can not hold a ton of weight. The project is very good too. It looks nice and elegant blue glass against mine. All in all I would recommend this scanner for anyone looking for a good, fast all purpose scanner for less than $ 100 worth the money (and the free super saving shipping is a nice bonus). Best Christmas gift I received. 546 of 570 people found the following review helpful. CanoScan 4400F vs 8600F by caveat emptor, it is difficult to find comparison specs between some of the new CanoScan. After looking at both the 4400F and 8600F, 8600F except the ability to scan medium format negatives and combined with a light version of Photoshop, 8600 is simply a more heavy machinery. An important difference is the lid. The 8600 has metal hinges and fits vertically on the metal support. There will also be open to 90 degrees of movement. The 4400 has a plastic hinge. To accommodate books or thick materials, has a break-away "articulating hinge - if you do like the thick of a book on the flatbed lid hinges open to attach the object to fit. The 4400 does not depend on its own remains open both lids are quite heavy and solid (the 8600 even more so), which is nice if you scan books or things that should be flat. But since 4400 all plastic hinge and has a small piece of plastic, or to formulate the position of the hinge lock, it does not really seem to lend themselves to many book-scanning. It looks like this lock or lock will eventually break, as it is, it sounds like its breaking every time snaps to hold a book. (Since I have a lot of book scans I decided that 8600 was better for them because the ceiling for adjustment and hinged construction and due to its heavy lid, despite the extra money. If I usually scan the photocopies or thin roots, The 4400 would have been good.) ) One last thing about the construction of the cover: The 8600 is a robust cable for the power of light in the lid, while the 4400 provides power to the lid of a thin ribbon cable that is visible in the hinge and it seems some 'vulnerable to heavy use.
