Most helpful customer reviews of 370 363 people found this review helpful. Finally - a slide scanner that works! With GK, I bought this scanner ideal After much frustration with two previous purchases, to reach those who failed: Canon CanoScan 4200F and the HP Scanjet 4890th The biggest problem with scanners is not the hardware but the software. In the case of the CanoScan 4200F (and even 8400 and 9950 models that use the same software), the driver strikes the right entirely on culture slides in standard mode "self-culture", it cuts the parts of the image but when "self-culture "is unchecked, it can not separate slides, allowing you to cut on each hand. What is worse, that the driver does not remember your settings so you can scan to reconfigure every detail again, every time you make. There are many other bugs in this driver also. Epson 4490, on the contrary, are very sensitive about cropping - it allows you to manually adjust the crop if you want, or disable it and simply scan each slide as a separate file, capturing the entire frame, this seems simple enough, since both Canon and Epson scanners employ plastic slide holders to fix the location of the slide relative to the scanner so the Epson software always knows how to reliably split multiple slides without cropping, while the Canon software simply gives up. Another area where scanner software often fails to install. Epson installation procedure worked perfectly and did not even need a restart to start the scan. HP 4890 installation was a complete disaster: Poster of "easy install" giant contradiction with the scanner when the installer to connect the scanner: instructions explicitly said to connect the scanner before installing the driver, but he really ran the Windows installer could not connect and never recognized the new hardware, even though the installer said I could connect the scanner later - that was not true, even after uninstalling and reinstalling and restarting the HP (it took about 40 minutes), although the scanner seemed to be recognized by windows and was "on", the driver simply dropped for good when it comes to exploration. I told these details about the HP scanner, and placed very close to the Epson 4490 in terms of price and features, however, is completely useless. In this context, another important issue technical support, in the case with HP's phone support is not recommended and hard to find - even if you can not find phone numbers, the quality of HP support personnel abysmal, in my experience Epson, however, publish phone numbers Support prominent place in the instructions that came with your scanner. Maybe Epson is easier to pay to publish these figures since the products work well because very little technology. This made me feel very confident with the Epson. Now the big payoff - scanning! The image quality you get is directly related to ease of use in configuring the software for scanning. Although the Epson software is not perfect, is very useful and powerful. It does a reasonable job of containment configuration options and advanced features for the "dust removal and correction of the" Digital ICE "image is very impressive. The deficiencies in the software are as follows. 1st The ability parameter "save" is unequal: one can not name the saved settings, the saved settings only configure half of the parameters before the preview - you can not configure the use of "dust", etc. 'Digital ICE " but must manually assign these options for each scan 2. The prefix used for naming files of scanned images does not allow an invalid file name in Windows'. "3. Size parameter 'of the target can not be saved. The solution is to use the "resolution" of the image parameters instead (resolution = 2400 can be saved and is equivalent to the resolution = 300, size = 800% at Target.
