Milligan I've been to a cheap duplex ADF scanner on the lookout for a while, I will scan a file cabinet of documents and shred the originals. I thought that HP was there, it is not. I spent several hours over a few days to give this guy a workout. I have scanned the stacks of bank statements (30-35 pages at once) (8.5 x 11) and mortgage documents (8.5 x 14) both single and double sided. Several times the ADF (scooter slipped and was eventually abandoned) and I had caught the people from around the jammed page, I was able to release any opportunity, its access to the paper. These pages are not shiny, just typical bank statement. Other times one or two pages from a stack of 35 would be to scan in only one third of the page. It can not scan duplex pages are longer than 12 inches, I do not know why. Duplex scanning requires twice as long as simplex because it has only a single scanner and must turn the page (I think that makes launching twice) software was not smart enough to handle the scanning of pages long mix, if I had a document (eg mortgage documents) with a mixture of letters and legal-size pages, I had to tell the software all the pages were 14 inches long, otherwise cut off the legal dimension of 11 inches. It all boils down to a lack of confidence in me. Before going to the initial destruction of these documents must be confident that I have a good electronic copies, and this scanner / software has not shown that trust. 39 of 40 people found this review helpful. Not for beginners. In PM Gross Windows XP. SP2. Single Gateway Profile computers. MS Office. Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional. With USB connection. Mostly used for scanning documents directly to *. PDF without using OCR. We bought this scanner a few months ago to replace an old HP scanner seven years, even with a document feeder, the HP Scanjet 5590 is not something you can expect to work right out of the box, not as a plug-and play as we had hoped. The included software is great and takes a long time to load (and fix!). It may also require some modifications to work at all, one of which we have received from HP on the phone and another (to improve the scan in PDF format), we have found on their website. After work, the software is not "intuitive". There are many complexities of digitization and the HP has a significant learning curve. The scanner warms up quickly, the document processor is relatively fast and reliable, but may crash if you do not like the paper fed through it. Duplex scan works but again, the card must be of good quality. We had no problems scanning a dozen or more pages, or the document feeder for scanning or indivual in a single PDF file. We also scanned a few photos * jpg with good results. We did not scan slides or negatives. We use only the software monitors and can not comment on the Properties button. We have not partially dismantled and manually clean the document feeder and has no comments on this feature. In short: If you have little computer experience, especially with the scan and you have the time to sort out the glitches, you can probably make 5590 work for you and get good results. If you are a relative beginner, this is not the right place to start. Add: 08/09. We bought a new computer with Vista (formerly XP) and the scanner. A software download required. The device is easy to install and worked faster and with fewer errors than before. UPDATE - early 2010. We started with software problems when the computer kept saying that some files were unavavilable. The solution (HP), the software is downloaded, it moves to a folder SEPARTATE open and expand the files and then install 91 of 100 customers this review helpful. This scanner sucks.
